Aberdeen Newsletter February 2012
February is about love and the heart, we can’t guarantee we can do anything for your love life but we can help to protect your heart with regular exercise.
Remember this is a leap year where women can propose to their partners - it also means there is an extra class….
Have a Heart: Strengthen Your Heart with Exercise
Just like any other muscle in your body, your heart becomes stronger with use. The more you exercise within your target heart rate, the more easily your heart will pump blood, helping you stay healthy for life.
The Mayo Clinic recommends 45 to 60 minutes of exercise per day, with strength training two to three times a week for a healthy heart. Jazzercise Founder and CEO Judi Sheppard Missett recommends talking with your doctor before beginning a new exercise programme or if you have been sedentary for a long time.
Doctors say it is safest and most beneficial to exercise in your target heart rate, which is normally 60 to 80 percent of your maximum heart rate. In this zone you are burning calories and strengthening your heart: working smarter, not harder. Find your maximum heart rate by subtracting your age from 220. Multiply the result by 0.6 to find the lower limit of your target heart rate and by 0.8 to find the upper limit of your target heart rate. You should be breathing hard but still be able to carry on a conversation.

Aberdeen Newsletter January 2012
Happy New Year
It’s the time of year to make our New Years Resolutions but research has shown that 25 percent of all resolutions will be abandoned after only one week, and another 10 percent dropped after the first month!!!
How do you make your New Year’s fitness resolution actually stick?
1. Set a Realistic Goal – Many of us abandon our New Year’s resolutions because we’ve set ourselves up to fail. If you want to achieve your goal, it needs to be a realistic one. Think about what you can actually do this year. If you’ve never jogged more than a mile, it’s unlikely that you’ll run a marathon in April. Perhaps setting the goal of running a 5K is better suited for this year, and save the marathon for another year.
2. Plan for Success – Pull out your Blackberry/i-phone etc Select what fitness classes you will attend during the next few weeks, and schedule these classes on your calendar. Consider these appointments as important as lunch with your boss or the annual check-up with your dentist. In other words, don’t cancel your fitness appointments – no matter what comes up!
3. Enlist Help – Tell your friends, family, and co-workers about your resolution. Ask them to hold you accountable and to help you meet your goal. If your social life used to be all about food and drink, suggest to your friends that you go bowling or hiking instead.
4. Reward Yourself – It’s important that you recognise your achievements, even if they appear small. Establish some rewards for sticking to your fitness regimen. After one week of success, book a manicure or pedicure. After the first full month, splurge on a new handbag. And if you fall off the wagon, don’t punish yourself! Get back up, dust yourself off, and start all over again.

November 2011
Workout in Winter and boost your immunity!!!
Wintertime is certainly a season for hot cocoa and fireside chats. But, chilly winter weather doesn't mean that you have to put your workout on hold for an entire season. It's hard to motivate yourself to keep moving when the temperature is dropping and the air is crisper. But, imagine how hard it will be to start up again if you take the next three months off from exercising altogether!
According to research conducted at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, adults who get regular cardiovascular exercise have fewer colds than their sedentary counterparts. So, the next time that you’re feeling sluggish, just remind yourself that your cardio regimen not only burns calories, blasts fat, and promotes heart health, but it also gives a boost to your immunity system as well.

April 2011
In the March 2011 Shape Magagine USA, a reader asked the question - I’ve been taking Jazzercise classes but they have been around forever. Am I really getting a good workout?
Answer: Great big yes!!!
The programme may have started in 1969, but Jazzercise® continues to be a body transformer. Dancing is a fabulous fat burner – it burns up to 8 calories a minute and studies show it challenges your brain too.
Plus, the workouts have evolved over the years. “We’ve incorportated everything from Latin dance and kickboxing to Pilates and weight training” says Judi Sheppard Missett, founder and CEO of Jazzercise® Inc. “Every class is different with new choreography and music so your muscles never get the chance to be bored.”
Thank you - A Big thank you to Jim the Janitor at Albyn School for all his help over the past 13 plus years that we have held Jazzercise® classes there.
Ballet Body by Jazzercise® - Ballet Body, an all new Jazzercise® specialty class, is coming soon for a limited time to a Jazzercise® location near you. Awaken the inner ballerina in you with full-body basic ballet movements to strengthen and lengthen your muscles for proper posture and grace for life. No experience necessary. No tutus required.
Airth 2011 - Wow what a weekend – the best ever!!! Our guest instructor from Italy Raffaele was a real hit!!! Watch out for the forms for 2012 and get yours away asap– you don’t want to miss out!!!!

Put a Spring in your Step
Finding the right pair of workout sneakers can often seem like a daunting task. An average shoe store has dozens of styles and designs.
Buying the wrong pair can be a costly mistake – not only for your wallet, but also for your precious feet.
1. Shop later in the day. Your feet tend to swell when you exercise. So, it is best to try on shoes when your foot size is at its largest point. Since your feet naturally swell throughout any given day, your afternoon shoe size is typically about one-half size larger than your morning shoe size.
2. Know what to look for. First, check the fit across the front of your shoe. Avoid styles or sizes that cram your toes. In fact, your longest toe should be about one-thumb width away from the tip of the shoe. You also want to make sure that you can wiggle your toes around. Then, check that your heel doesn’t slide or slip-out of the back of the shoe. Lastly, be sure that your foot doesn’t slide off the inner or outside edge.
3. Learn the lingo. There are three major support components of a shoe. The insole is a foam insert located inside the shoe. It conforms to the shape of your foot and can be removed to make room for custom-designed inserts. Meanwhile, the midsole is the foam layer that offers cushion and support for your arch. And lastly, the outsole is the rubber tread of your sneakers. Different outsoles have varying types of traction, making them best-suited for indoor or outdoor workouts.
4. Test them out. Before you leave the store, make sure that you test out your shoes. That doesn’t mean just walking around in them. You need to perform a few exercises, to see how they feel.
5. Remember that you know best. The friendly salesperson may have a lot of knowledge about shoe design, style, and comfort. But, he/she doesn’t know your workout or how your foot feels in a shoe.

January 2011 If you’re like most people, you probably have some type of exercise or fitness goal this year. Of course, you already know that making the resolution is the easy part. The hard part is actually sticking with it.
So what's your game plan? If you really want to stick with it, you need to have a plan that will keep you on track. Block out time each week for your workout. Be prepared. Have a gym bag packed in your car or at your office so you don't have any excuses not to come to class.
Buddy up. You are probably not the only one who made a resolution to get in better shape. Get together with a friend or family member and plan to workout together. You'll be more likely to come to class if you have a friend depending on you.
December 2010 5 Steps to Avoid Holiday Weight Gain
1. What is my plan? Before the holidays even begin, create a plan. Mark your calendar with pre-set appointments for your exercise sessions. Decide on your menus ahead of time, and head to the produce section of your grocery store to stock-up on fruits and leafy greens.
2. How can I get my co-workers to help out? Office settings can be a catastrophe for nutritional eating. So, talk to your colleagues ahead of time. Ask everyone to agree that fattening desserts and sugary treats will be kept in one section of the office only. That way, you can easily avoid the route of temptation.
3. Why am I attending this party? When you think about it, you generally don’t attend a party for the food. You’re there to spend time with your friends and family. So, do exactly that! Focus on socialising. There’s no reason to make three trips to the buffet when you’re engrossed in calorie-free conversation.
4. Am I getting my five-a-day? Eat five or more servings of fruits and vegetables every day. The fibre in these low-calorie foods will give your stomach a full sensation, so you’re less likely to chow-down on cakes, candies, or crackers
5. What are my favorite indulgences? It’s okay to have a
tasty treat now and then. If you deprive yourself of everything, you’re more likely to binge in a moment of weakness. So, pick your favourites, and allow yourself those indulgences this holiday season. Don’t waste calories on a vending machine bag of crisps when what you’re really craving is homemade cherry pie.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family from Judy, Kay and all of the Jazzercise Aberdeen Team.
We look forward to seeing you all in 2011.
Classes resume on Monday 3rd January 2011 at Craigiebuckler and Tuesday 4th at Albyn school.
